Shadow Boxes and Assemblages

As a theatre artist I have spent most of my life bringing stories into the material world through scenery and costumes. I am inspired by the works of Joseph Cornell, Henry Darger, William Kentridge and many others who combine visual arts with performance, literature, film and music.
The following shadow boxes are inspired by the story of The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Expuréry, in which the prince leaves his tiny planet and travels to earth in search of answers to the mysteries of love, life and loneliness. I have read this story many times throughout my life and with each read it offers me more insight and wonder.
My interpretation of this story puts the characters of the sheep, butterflies, fox, rose, and moon snails, on a nostalgic stage, complete with drapery and tiny footlights. I have used some creative license to cast the character of the little prince as a deer, because… why not? I have always wanted to see a deer on stage and hear their dainty hooves click along the floor boards as they break the fourth wall and stare out at the audience with all of their fragile timid beauty, like a prince.

Some of these shadow boxes have found a new home, but if you see anything you would like, please let me know and I would be happy to make you one. Contact me HERE.

The following assemblages use fine metals, found objects and acrylic paint backdrops to create a fantasy world that explores the concepts of measuring the immeasurable and hope for our future.
